After 40 years of working I can say with a great deal of certainty that I have never planned my career: it has just happened. I think that is probably true for most of us - things crop up and I have certainly drifted from one opportunity to the next, although they have always been to do with food. I have tried to be the grapefruit that caught Oscar Wilde’s imagination when he declared of citrus “A grapefruit is a lemon that had a chance and took advantage of it” - but I have not made my chances myself.
"I am now determined to follow my own agenda of making whisky a fun tasting experience for everyone"
I hope it is not too late to take control of my own destiny? How I admire younger people who have a goal and go after it while they have mortgages to pay and many other work and personal commitments. I am now determined to follow my own agenda of making whisky a fun tasting experience for everyone, of matching it to seasonal foods, and to demystify the spirit, especially for lady drinkers.
(I’m also going to try to spend more time gardening at home and at Tangmere Community Garden, and playing the piano and upsetting Archie by getting my trumpet out more often. I think he thinks I should stick to cooking!)
