Judy Ridgeway is known in the Twitter world as @JudyOliveOil. She and I have been friends for many years. I really respect the way in which she has made a completely new career, moving on from PR then food and wine writing, and becoming a leading authority in the world of olive oil. Internationally respected, Judy is also a whisky lover and I have been hoping to catch up with her to record a podcast for ages. Now you can eavesdrop on our conversations about olive oils, whiskies and flavours.

We tasted The Aultmore of the Foggie Moss 12yo from Dewars (about £42), Glenfarclas 21yo (about £80), AnCnoc 12yo (about £32), GlenDronach The Hielan 8yo (about £32.50) and Compass Box Hedonism Quindecimus (£128).

We ate saucisson, air-dried ham, tomato salad, lightly smoked salmon and a potato and cucumber salad in a mustard vinaigrette.

We talked about flavour and how to taste, about olive oils and the new harvest of olives for oil in India. We also discussed China’s fascination with olive oil. Judy was amazed at the new styles in Speyside whiskies. She encouraged me to stop thinking about The Fanous Grouse as an unbreakable habit for emerging whisky drinkers and to use it as a springboard for further whisky exploration. A really good idea.

We both thoroughly enjoyed sharing food, whisky and conversation. Do listen in.
